Lafayette School Corporation proudly serves over 1200 Multilingual Learners (MLs) representing a rich variety of languages and cultures.  Our mission is to support English Learners and immigrant students through high-quality English language development (ELD) instruction, while ensuring access to grade-level academic content and fostering a strong sense of belonging.

What is Required?

Each school must provide a core English Language Development (ELD) program that:

• Ensures access to English instruction and grade-level content
• Is supplemental to core instruction
• Is taught by trained teachers
• Uses only state and local funds

Why it Matters: Legal Foundations

Lau v. Nichols (1974)

Schools must take active steps to support English learners.

If English is the language of instruction, schools are required to adapt instruction to meet the linguistic needs of students who don't yet speak English.

Castaneda v. Pickard (1981)

Schools must meet a 3-part test to ensure the yare supporting ELs effectively:

1. The program must be based on sound educational theory.
2. It must be implemented effectively with resources and trained staff.
3. It must show evidence of helping students overcome language barriers.

How We Provide ELD

Models include:

• Intervention groups
• EL Team or Teacher
• High School ENL class
• Co-teaching

ELD must be 30-45 minutes per day,  4-5 days a week.
