The objective of MAP is to encourage the working together of Miller parents and Miller educators to provide children with a healthy environment for their mental, social, physical and emotional development and to strive to map out a better tomorrow for each child.
MAP membership is for anyone who has a child enrolled at Miller. Each fall, at the start of the school year, parents are invited to volunteer to represent their child’s class at monthly MAP meetings. MAP officers are elected each spring and serve a two-year term. The principal and at least one teacher representative attend monthly meetings.
MAP members are responsible for voicing common concerns, explaining classroom successes and offering suggestions. The group works to provide solutions as well as to suggest new programs and procedures that will make our school a better place.
MAP is responsible for generating and maintaining a financial budget. Our main fundraiser is an annual winter carnival. We also organize two or three additional fundraising events throughout the school year. In 2005 we organized our first candy bar sale. We collect Box Tops for Education and Campbell’s Labels, as well as pop tabs for Riley Hospital. Money raised helps fund convocations, field trips, supplemental staff needs, staff recognition events, a t-shirt for each Miller student and several other programs.
We plan several family events throughout the year. In October and January we host Family Movie Nights. In November we host Donuts for Dads, and in May we organize a Mom’s Breakfast. In April of 2006 we hosted our first Family Art Night, which culminated in the creation of a large banner that is permanently displayed in the library. These activities are meant to foster a sense of community and family and to encourage parent participation at school. They are offered to Miller families free of charge.
